Effective Strategies for Growing Your Email Subscriber List

by | Feb 15, 2024 | Email Marketing

Although much maligned (particularly in the early 2000’s) email marketing remains a formidable marketing tool. However, building a robust subscriber list is key to success, especially since GDPR. In this blog we’ll look at some effective strategies you can use to grow your subscriber list and develop relationships with your ideal customers.

Clients and Prospects

According to GDPR you can legally subscribe someone to your mailing list if they are a customer or have enquired about your services. And you can keep them for a ‘reasonable period of time’ – yes that is what the regulation actually says. If someone complains you must be able to prove that they are a client or they have enquired about your products or services, or you have given them a quote.

Of course, you must give them the opportunity to unsubscribe if they wish, but you do not have to get them to ‘double opt-in’. Ever wondered why retail stores are so keen to email us a receipt these days? This is why!

Everyone Else

You CANNOT just subscribe anyone else…met someone at a networking event that gave you their business card – nope, saw someone’s van in the super marketing car park – nope, bought a list – definitely not!

And to be honest I don’t know why you would want to…they do not know you; they are not interested…you’ll just end up with loads of unsubscribes or terrible open and click rates.

GDPR

The General Data Protection Regulations say you MUST be able to either prove you have a ‘legitimate interest’ i.e. they are a client, or have enquired about your services, or that they chose to subscribe – ideally with a date, time and IP address.

OK, so now we move on to how do you get these people that you don’t already know to subscribe…

Incentive

Give them a good reason…a discount code, free eBook, webinar or access to some premium content. Ensure the incentive aligns with your target audience’s interests and provides real value.

Optimised Sign-Up Forms

KISS – Keep It Simple Stupid…keep form fields minimal, requesting only the information you really need. Be clear about the benefits of subscribing, how often and what kind of content they can expect.

Social Media

Share your sign-up link in social media to expand your reach. You can even leverage social media advertising to reach specific audience demographics.

Events

If someone has signed up to a talk, workshop, or webinar you are giving, you have legitimate interest – you can add them. If you are a guest speaker – share the link so people can sign-up.

Strategic Partnerships

You cannot subscribe other businesses customers to your email list, but you could ask them to promote your sign-up link on their websites or social media and you could do the same for them.

Growing your email subscriber list is a continual process that requires strategic planning, creativity, and persistence. By implementing these strategies, you can attract quality subscribers and drive engagement and conversions through your email marketing efforts. Remember to focus on providing value, building trust, and delivering relevant content to your subscribers to keep them engaged and loyal over time.
